Bulla Fey Interview
by manny marx
Posted on Dec 27, 2016
As 2016 comes to a close it's a time for many to reflect on the past year. If I could sum up 2016 with one word it would be "Loss". Loss as in ruin, an instance of losing, a failure to gain, and a decrease in amount, magnitude, and degree. Whether it be the loss of loved ones, cultural icons, or the loss of a political struggle–personally and to many of those who are around me–2016 was the epitome of the word. Yet, despite the unease and discomfort loss brings, we need it because it’s the catalyst for growth, change, birth, and renewal. From the undergrowth of loss's decay and in the new void its absence created, something sprouts. Yet, unlike a phoenix’s rebirth, this is something novel. Something au courant. Something like Bulla Fey.

The heater is beeping again, either it's out of kerosene or another 3 hours have passed. My eyes are fixated on the display. I tap away on my keyboard determined to bring life to these ideas. Ideas which have been aching to escape and manifest into something material. As soon as I get home from work they pull me to my computer with an electromagnetic force. No longer impeded, the winter cold begins seeping in through the walls. "...Work...", I murmur to myself as I glide the cursor up to the top of the screen, clueless as to what time will drop down from the menu bar. 11pm? 2am? I've no idea and it doesn't really matter because I know I'm not going to bed until I finish what I set out to do. "Excellent", I exhale. It's only half past one and I still have a few hours left in me. Although, I hope my wife doesn't get too worried if I don't sleep tonight for the nth time this month.

Global Game Jam
Something from Nothing

When I see giant electric towers, bridges, skyscrapers, and a bunch of other man-made structures I can't help but to marvel at them. I think to myself, "How many minds and bodies did it take to put this all together?" I also have the same appreciation for video games, and if I really think about it, it's one of the main aspects which I enjoy about them. Many times while playing a game I often ponder, "How did they make this possible?"," "How did they think of this?!" Well, I was lucky enough to get a small taste of the process at the 2016 Dwango Global Game Jam.

Secret Lives

Secret Lives' nine song album "Fortune Teller" is a banger. It's not only 20 mins of non-stop solid musicianship but also filled to the brim with masterful lyricism. Rob, Duncan, and Gordon keep it so fucking real that it reminded me exactly why I went to hardcore shows 20 years ago. Albums like this are the reason why I feel compelled to write about and share independent music. It's ordinary, albeit talented, people creating extraordinary music. Oh, and did I mention this album was just a "side project" as its members are from Iron Chic and Capital.

Carcosa
by manny marx

"Carcosa is a fictional city in the Ambrose Bierce short story An Inhabitant of Carcosa (1891). In Bierce's story, the ancient and mysterious city is barely described, and is viewed only in hindsight (after its destruction) by a character who once lived there ... Later writers, including H. P. Lovecraft and his many admirers, became great fans of Chambers' work and incorporated the name of Carcosa into their own stories, set in the Cthulhu Mythos." —Wikipedia.
I have to admit it's been a few months since I have sat down and listened to some hard core.

STEVE MUESKE

Steve Mueske's Dyads: #1, #2, and #3 are delicious musical morsels made with acuminous detail. Each Dyad is kind of like those fancy dishes that come on a big plate with one small piece of food on it but without any of the pretentiousness and much more filling.

So this is it. After weeks of watching YouTube videos, combing through tomes of stackoverflow posts, reading a ton of blogs / articles, and very late nights / early mornings. It's DONE.
... well kind of...it's done for the most part.... mannymarx.com has been something I have wanted to do for awhile; that is to build a website as well as connect creatively with people around the world. It feels so great to finally have this site up, running, and responsive—I hope. What feels even greater is being able to make music again.
